An Excuse To Drink – The Hunger Games released today

The movie version of The Hunger Games is being released today. This first novel in a pretty epic trilogy promises to be a huge success. The book series started off as just a simple young adult distopia work, but has become pretty popular with readers of all ages.

The book and movie has some pretty distinctive characters such as Katniss Everdeen (played by Winter’s Bone’s Jennifer Lawrence), Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), President Snow (Donald Sutherland), Peeta and Rue. Woody Harrelson also stars as the ever drunken Haymitch Abernathy. But one of our favorites characters in the book, and likely the film, is the colorful Effie Trinket.

Actress Elizabeth Banks, who plays Effie, recently posted a variation of the classic Pink Lady cocktail inspired by Effie.

So here it is:

Effie Trinket’s Pink Lady

1 ½ oz. gin
½ oz.  Grenadine
2 oz. coffee cream

Shake well over ice. Strain it into a martini glass. Garnish with a cherry or a sliver of orange peel.

Here are some other cocktails courtesy of foreveryoungadult.com:

The Katniss

1 part Pernod Absinthe
seedless green grapes
1 dash bitters
1 1/2 part Gin
3/4 part ginger syrup
1/2 part fresh lime juice
soda water

Muddle grapes, Absinthe and bitters. Add gin, ginger syrup and lime juice. Shake and strain into an ice-filled collins glass, top with soda water. Garnish with grapes

The Haymitch
