McMenamins Kennedy School
We are big fans of Portland, OR. We have been there for conferences. We have been there for family vacations. We love the awesome Portlandia show on IFC. The Dream of the 90′s IS alive in Portland. And we love the area for that.
There is a chain of bars, restaurants and hotels in the Portland area that is “so Portland”. They are McMenamins. They have multiple locations, but no one is the same as another.
Our personal favorite is McMenamins Kennedy School located at 5736 N.E. 33rd Ave in Northeast Portland. This is a former school that opened in 1915 and closed after the 1974-1975 school year. McMenamins fixed it up and opened it in 1997.
They have hotel rooms, multiple restaurants, a soaking pool, a movie theater and most importantly numerous bars.
The Boiler Room Bar is a multi-level bar located, shockingly, in the former boiler room. But our 2 favorites are the extremely small Honors Bar and Detention Bar. As they say at Kennedy School “Getting into trouble was never this much fun!”.
There are also bars in the restaurants and movie theater.
If in Portlandia you owe it to yourself to make at least one trip to McMenamins Kennedy School.
