World Gin Day 2011 – Martin Miller’s Gin Review

Disclosure:

I recently received a sample bottle of Martin Miller’s Gin (80 proof version). I had heard about their product and had heard good things from our buddy Justin from ginreviews.com, so I was definitely looking forward to trying this gin for myself.

Martin Miller’s Gin:

“Born of Love, Obsession and Some Degree of Madness”

Martin Miller’s is a “super-premium” gin that entered the world market in 1999 and was soon winning awards everywhere. The gin is distilled from grain in Langley, England using a single, 1904 vintage, three story high pot still dubbed “Angela”, Miller’s Gin utilizes only the middle or “heart” of the resulting distillate. In another departure from the norm, the nine botanicals are steeped overnight in spirit and hot water in a manner not dissimilar to brewing with loose tea leaves. The citrus elements are also separately distilled. All of this individual treatment of the components is aimed towards creating a more balanced product. Once all the elements are combined, they are shipped three thousand miles across the Atlantic to be blended with pure Icelandic glacial spring water.

Nose:

Sweet, crisp and floral. Definite presence of lemon/orange zest. Juniper notes are there but not overpowering. Very little alcohol “burn”.

Taste:

Like most of the “new-wave” premium gins, the juniper in Martin Miller’s 80 proof Gin is slightly reigned in, but definitely present which suits my palate perfectly. Sweet lemon and orange notes are prevalent, with juniper lingering slightly behind.

Mixability:

As usual, in addition to tasting it straight, we tried this gin out in a classic dry Martini recipe (how can you NOT on World Gin Day!), using Dale DeGroff’s recipe, using Martini and Rossi dry vermouth and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The well balanced qualities of this gin makes it a near perfect match to any classic cocktail recipe.

Pricing & Availability:

Martin Miller’s 80 proof Gin is widely available both online and in brick-and-mortar stores and retails for around $27 USD.

Stay tuned for more from Martin Miller’s Gin in the coming weeks!!
