Today in 1999, right-to-die activist Dr. Jack Kevorkian was found guilty of the second-degree murder after euthanizing terminally ill patient Thomas Youk, with his “death machine”. Kevorkian, who had specialized in pathology, earned the nickname “Dr. Death” after obsessively observing the changes in dying patients while working in Detroit following the Vietnam War. He eventually became fascinated with physician-assisted suicide and built his first “death machine” in 1989. Though sentenced to 10-25 years, Kevorkian was eventually paroled in 2007.
