On this date in 1556, Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury under both Henry VIII and Edward VI, was burnt at the stake by Catholic Queen Mary I. Cranmer is noteworthy in the Anglican faith for helping shape the doctrine and liturgy of the religion and writing/compiling the first two editions of the Book of Common Prayer. Though he recanted the Protestant faith and temporarily reconciled with the Catholic faith when initially imprisoned, Cranmer withdrew his remarks before his death and died a martyr for the faith.
