An Excuse to Drink – Happy Birthday James Joyce
On this date in 1882, Irish novelist and playwright James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was born in Rathgar, Ireland (a suburb of Dublin). A major figure in the modernist literary movement, he pioneered the “stream-of-consciousness” technique. Joyce’s major works include Ulysses (a modern retelling of Homer’s tale), The Dubliners, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Finnegan’s Wake. James Joyce died on January 11, 1941 from complications following ulcer surgery.
Joyce’s life and works are celebrated in Dublin every year on June 16th, or “Bloomsday”, in honor of the day the action in novel Ulysses occurs. It usually entails an extended pub crawl.
