An Excuse to Drink – 1971: NHL Great, Gordie Howe Retires from the NHL

September 9, 1971: Gordie “Mr. Hockey” Howe,  ends his 25 years playing for the NHL’s  Detroit Red Wings due to a chronic wrist injury. He would eventually return to play for the Hartford Whalers of the NHL, and the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers in the World Hockey Association (WHA).

The following drink goes out to Christina, one of my best friends in the world and a die-hard Red Wings (and Vernor’s!) fan. If you’ve never had Vernor’s Ginger Soda (a Michigan standard), I suggest you try it. It’s got a pretty hard ginger kick, not quite to the level of Blenheim, but still enough to make the mere mortal sneeze. In the Maryland area you can get it from nearly any Giant Food store location, but if hard-pressed you can find it at a site like beveragesdirect.

The drink is pretty simple, and probably could do with a vodka or rum “upgrade” to give it a bit more kick. Any ideas? Send them in!
