An Excuse to Drink – The London Blitz Begins

September 7, 1940: The German Luftwaffe began a sustained bombing campaign of Britain that continued until May 10, 1941. Though it would eventually spread to other cities and towns across the country, the Luftwaffe opened with seventy-six consecutive nightly raids on the capital city. The end toll was over 43,000 civilian deaths, and the destruction of over 1 million London structures.

While it would be in extremely poor taste (which we have gone to before, and will again, but this isn’t the place)  to suggest that we “celebrate” this event, maybe we can raise a glass to British resilience in the face of World War II adversity.

The following drink borrows it’s name from the German terror-weapon, the rocket-propelled V-1, which was nick-named the buzz-bomb due to the characteristic noise it produced. To be perfectly honest, the V-1s really wouldn’t hit London until summer of ’44, but we’re not splitting hairs here…

Buzz Bomb

  • 1 oz Vodka
  • 1 oz Cognac
  • 1 oz Benedictine Herbal Liqueur
  • 1 oz Cointreau® Orange Liqueur
  • 1 oz Lime Juice
  • Champagne

Glass: Champagne

Garnish: None

Shake with ice and strain into champagne glass. Top with champagne.
