Every holiday deserves to be celebrated properly, and National Martini Day is certainly deserving of a toast. Steeped in American history, this cocktail has one of the most fiercely debated origins, but emerges sometime in the mid-to-late 19th century. The drink’s popularity took off during U.S. Prohibition when the glut of illegal “bathtub” gin manufacturing helped to make the Martini the predominant cocktail of the 20th century. Regardless of its origin, the martini quickly gained fans from the ranks of such famed personalities as John D. Rockefeller, James Bond, Humphrey Bogart, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Clark Gable and Ernest Hemingway. Since then, the the martini has taken on various adaptations (a certainly adulterations) but the classic combination of gin and dry vermouth remains supreme.
To get you all set to celebrate this evening, we have compiled a few modern and classic takes on the Martini:
Martini & Rossi® Classic Martini
- 1/2 part Martini & Rossi® Extra Dry vermouth
- 3 parts Bombay Sapphire® Gin
Stir Martini & Rossi® Extra Dry vermouth and Bombay Sapphire® over ice in a mixing glass. Strain into a chilled martini cocktail glass. Serve with an lemon twist.
Martini & Rossi® Dirty Martini
- ½ part Martini & Rossi® Extra Dry Vermouth
- 2 parts Bombay Sapphire Gin
- ¼ part olive juice
Mix Martini & Rossi® Extra Dry vermouth, Bombay Sapphire and olive juice over ice into a mixing glass. Strain into a chilled martini cocktail glass. Serve with olive.
GREY GOOSE® “Original” Classic Martini
The vodka martini is highly controversial among the purists, but this version harkens back to the 1904 “Marguerite” cocktail, one of a possible myriad of Martini ancestors.
- 2 Parts GREY GOOSE® Original
- ½ Part NOILLY PRAT® Original French Dry Vermouth
- 1 Dash Orange Bitter
Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add NOILLY PRAT Original French Dry Vermouth. Stir to coat ice and strain out. Add GREY GOOSE Vodka and bitters, if desired, and stir well. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Present with an olive or lemon twist.
Some of these play hard-and-fast with the Martini definition, but we have included a few of these unorthodox recipes to accommodate the less booze-forward palates.
GREY GOOSE® VX Martini Exceptionelle
- 2.5 oz. GREY GOOSE® VX
- Absinthe rinse
- Spray of honey water
- Garnish or skewer of frozen grapes
Rinse absinthe in glass. Stir VX over ice and strain in martini glass. Spray honey water into glass. Garnish with frozen grapes, a peach slice, or no garnish at all.
- 1 part Martini & Rossi® Extra Dry vermouth
- 1½ parts Orange Flavored Rum
- ½ part St-Germain French elderflower liqueur
- ½ part pomegranate juice
Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled martini cocktail glass.

- 1 ¼ oz Fords Gin
- 1 oz Dolin Dry Vermouth
- ¾ oz Laird’s Jersey Lightning Unaged Apple Brandy
Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. Stir and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a blackberry.
Lady in Red

- 2 oz Brooklyn Gin washed with kaffir lime powder, double-strained*
- ¾ oz PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur
- 1 shiso leaf, smacked
- ¾ oz lemon juice
- ½ oz agave nectar
Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. Shake and double-strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
*Mix 2 oz of Brooklyn Gin with 1 barspoon of kaffir lime powder in a mixing tin. Shake well and double-strain.

- 2 oz London dry gin
- 1 oz bianco vermouth
- ¼ oz PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur
- 2 dashes orange bitters
- Lemon twist
Add all ingredients to a mixing glass and stir over fresh ice for 20 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon twist.
