St. Patrick’s Day has been observed by the Irish for 1000 years, but the fascinating story behind this holiday goes far beyond green beer and dye in the Chicago River. While we all know that St. Patrick chased the snakes out of Ireland, few are aware that he grew up in a well-to-do Roman family living in Britain, but was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland to be a slave.
While enslaved, he experienced a dream in which God told him to flee for the coast, where a ship would return him to Britain. After a daring escape and return to his home, Patrick amazed his family by announcing his desire to return to Ireland to live among his former captors as a missionary.
By the time of his death, believed to be March 17, 460 AD, Patrick was a beloved bishop who had baptized thousands of Christians and supported the rights of the Irish against oppression by Britain.
Today, St. Patrick’s day is an official holiday in the Emerald Isle. Whether you are Irish all year long, as I am, or only on St. Patrick’s Day, here are some tasty concoctions to celebrate.
Face it, we all need a stiff drink to deal with all the craziness that comes with this major drinking holiday…
