Yes, black licorice lovers, July 2nd is National Anisette Day!
Anisette is just one of the many varieties of anise-flavored liqueurs. The specific characteristics vary by region, but is generally colorless, and sweeter than other anise-based spirits. Though commonly enjoyed straight, some people prefer anisette when it is mixed with cold water, where it produces a milky white effect similar to the “louching” of absinthe.
Some variants include:
Anisette (aka Anis): Distilled with aniseed (at least for the better brands) alone true versions contain no licorice. Popular in Spain Portugal, France and Turkey, it is usually colorless and sweeter than other anise liqueurs. Italy’s Sambuca is a well known example of this style.
Pastis: Though similar to anisette this liqueur gains its flavor not by distillation, but by macerating aniseed and licorice.similar-tasting liqueur, is made by maceration, using a combination of aniseed and licorice. Pastis is mainly popular in France.
To mark the day, we have included the recipe for the “Black Bomber”, an unusual combination of espresso (anisette always works well with coffee!), gin and orange bitters:
- 1 shot Espresso
- ½ part Hiram Walker® Anisette
- 1½ parts Beefeaters® Gin
- Dash Orange Bitters (optional)
- Pour the espresso into an empty shaker. Add Anisette, gin & optional bitters. Fill with ice, shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with 3 espresso beans.
